5 Picturesque Places to Go for A Walk in Berlin
Whether you prefer to stroll through lush green gardens or an urban oasis by to the river, Berlin has no shortage of swoon-worthy places to go for a stroll or a jog. You’ll also be pleased to find out that it doesn’t matter which part of the city you’re staying in. In this post, I’m sharing five picturesque walks in five different areas of Berlin. There’s truly nothing I love more than exploring new places by foot. So, when I moved to Berlin, the first thing I did was download my favorite playlist on Spotify and head out for a run or a walk to see what I could find.
I love my walks through Berlin so much that I’ve now created an Instagram Story Highlight specifically to share my views with you so be sure to follow along on Instagram. You can find me @ChelseaDinen. Now, without further ado, let’s go for a stroll.
Volkspark Friedrichshain
This is a large, park bordering Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg that runners and walkers alike love to frequent. As I entered the park for the first time early one Saturday morning in the summer, I felt as though I was walking into a magical German forest. The tall trees stretched out above and the sun peeked through the leaves while the birds chirped all around me.
The German Chancellory
Perhaps you’re surprised to see the German Chancellory on here, especially if you’re not yet familiar with Berlin, but if you’re looking for a more urban stroll, this is the place. The German Chancellory, which is also known as “The Washing Machine” because of its architectural design, is set on the Spree, not far from the Reichstag. With paths leading you around every side of the Chancellory and the tranquil view along the river, this is one of my favorite places to walk on a sunny day or warm evening.
Bonus Walk: Not far from the Chancellory, you’ll find Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with glorious architecture (and museums of course). Read more about two of the museum I fell in love with here.
Karl-Marx-Allee
If you’re an architecture lover like I am, the ‘wedding cake style’ worker’s palaces from the former DDR-era that line this monumental boulevard will be the perfect backdrop for your next walk. Karl-Marx-Allee is 90 meters wide and runs for 2.3km from Friedrichshain to Alexanderplatz in Mitte. Along portions of the north side, tree-lined paths are perfect for walkers, runners, strollers, and bikes. I especially love this walk during the Summer and Autumn months because of the beautiful trees. With the TV tower on one end and the stunning Frankfurter Tor on the other, this is another urban stroll you ought to add to your list.
Charlottenburg Palace Gardens
Quite the contrast from what you’ll see along Karl-Marx-Allee, Charlottenburg Palace (Schloss Charlottenburg) is a palace built in the baroque style for Sophie Charlotte, wife of Friedrich I of Prussia. Built at the end of the 17th Century, you’ll most certainly be taking a step back into time as you enter the gardens behind this extraordinary palace. Take a walk around the grounds, sit by the fountain or under a tree, walk across the bridge for the best view of the palace, and take in the tranquility surrounding you. I think this just might be the most picturesque walk in town because of the size of the property, the carefully-manicured lawns, and the peaceful nature no matter which path you take.
Oberbaumbrücke to the Rummelsburger See
A great former East Berlin walk for those that are searching for that authentic Berlin vibe, begins in the area of Friedrichshain near the fortress-like Oberbaumbrücke (Oberbaum Bridge). Start walking along the East Side Gallery, under the bridge, and along the Spree. This part of the walk is perfect for sunset, as you watch the sun sink behind the bridge. Be sure to look across the Spree where you’ll spot the Molecule Man sculpture which beautifully reflects the glow at sunset. To continue your walk, start walking towards the Ostkreuz Bahnhof and cut over to the Rummelsburger See. A winding
