Amsterdam is an incredible city to visit in every season and it’s especially charming in the autumn months as the crisp days begin. Before we get into outfit recommendations, here are some of my top tips as a local living in Amsterdam.

Top Tips
- Layer! It’s not uncommon to see the rain, wind and sunshine all within one hour here in Amsterdam, so be prepared.
- It never hurts to carry an umbrella just in case. This is my favourite umbrella that’s survived many windy British and Dutch days!
- Amsterdam style is casual chic so you can leave the heels at home.
- It’s worth noting that there are lots of uneven old streets in Amsterdam so mind your step and wear comfortable shoes.
Autumn Weather in Amsterdam
In October, the average high temperature is 14°C (57.2°F) and the average night-time low is 8°C (46.4°F). In November, it ranges from a high of 10°C (50°F) to a low of 4°C (39.2°F). Again, it’s usually a mix of clouds, some rain and wind in the autumn months so keep this in mind when choosing what to pack. Be sure to pack at least one water-resistant pair of shoes or a shoe protector spray (this one is my favourite).
As you can see, a lot depends on which part of autumn you plan to visit Amsterdam in. If it’s earlier in the season, bring a light jacket or two and some knit sweaters. Water-resistant, windproof trench coats are ideal for Amsterdam. If it’s later in the season, you’ll want some warmer jackets and accessories such as a scarf.
Essentials for Your Autumn Wardrobe
Below, I’ve put together a few Autumn outfits to use as inspiration whilst packing. Many of these pieces can be mixed and matched as you please! Feel free to save them to your Pinterest board.
Autumn accessories for Amsterdam
- Umbrella
- Raincoat
- Scarf
- Crossbody bag or small backpack. If you’re looking for a waterproof backpack, this is my all-time favourite.
Packing Tips
I always use packing cubes for longer trips. I have found that they really help to keep everything tidy and organised. The packing cubes I recommend are also compressible which will help you fit more clothing into your bag, when needed.
When choosing which outfits to pack for Amsterdam, remember to pick versatile pieces that you can mix and match depending on the weather. For example: denim, a trench coat, neutral/complementary colours, and pieces that can be layered.
I hope you found this packing list helpful and insightful as you prepare for your fall trip to Amsterdam! The Netherlands has so much to offer at this time of the year, just as the weather starts to become more crisp and cosy.
