Spring Hygge at Home

Spring Hygge at Home | ChelseaDinen.com

Hygge – the Danish word that cannot be directly translated but represents the feeling of comfort when cosying up and finding joy in the simple things. Though the concept of hygge originated in Denmark to foster warm feelings and joy during the long, dark, cold winters, hygge can be experienced worldwide, year-round.

New to hygge? You can find a video detailing (and showing you) what exactly hygge is right here.

Now that we are moving into the beautiful season of spring, I’ve created a relaxing video, walking you through some simple ideas to make your home more hyggelig in the Springtime. You can jump directly to that video below or continue reading.

Items You’ll See in My Home

Lighter fabrics

As the temperatures begin to get a bit warmer, store away those heavy fleece blankets and opt instead for lighter fabrics and materials. I love these striped tassel throw blankets like the one I have and this cozy cotton blanket.

Adding pops of soft colors

While in winter, I love brightening up my space with winter whites, spring inspires me to add pops of pastel pink and lilac to my neutral palette. The energy of hygge is soft, light, and warm so try to find subtle ways to add a little color to your home to bring in the spirit of spring. Perhaps you can add some fresh flowers to a vase or add a throw pillow like this beautiful blush one to your couch.

Soft lighting

This is an element of hygge that remains the same throughout the seasons. Harsh overhead lighting is not hyggelig so instead, I use candles and soft ambient lighting to create a warm, glowy feeling in the home. This has made a huge difference in how cosy my home feels. It’s been fun to experiment with different lighting options and candles. I hardly ever turn my lamps on these days!

If you do want overhead lighting, use a pendant light like this one or this one to diffuse the light.

Spring aromas

I love incorporating floral scents into my home through candles and fresh flowers. This is also an easy way to incorporate some of those soft springtime colors I mentioned earlier. The flower options for Spring are endless and for many of us, picking out a beautiful bouquet to bring home sparks joy within.

Fresh air

Open up the windows or crack open a door to let the sounds of nature fill your home. Danish homes incorporate a lot of natural elements in them to bring the outside in and there is nothing more refreshing than fresh air or the sound of birds or the rain.

These are just some simple ideas I hope have inspired you to freshen up your home with joy and positivity. Hygge is simple. Many of these things you may have very well been doing each spring. However, the concept of hygge gives me just a little more purpose behind creating that essence in my home, no matter the season.

I’ve seen the difference it’s made to take the time to design my home and space with intention. Hygge has been a big part of this. And I hope the same for you. Feel free to watch the video below to see how I’ve personally made my home more hyggelig this spring.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy!
